Season 4 - Shipping April 28

Welcome back to the Forward Lottery, Season Four.

SEASON FOUR tickets go on sale March 1st
SEASON FOUR coffee will be shipped April 28th
SEASON FOUR evaluation will occur June 25th, 26th and 27th.

*These dates have been pushed back two weeks from what was originally intended*

**Lottery Tickets require shipping payment at checkout. Please do not select Forward Five Free Shipping option. The Lottery is only available for roasters in Canada due to the challenges of shipping green coffee across international borders. In the future, we plan to find a solution and include the roasting world beyond Canada.**

Each quarter we plan to host a new season of the Forward Lottery, our intention is to push roasters outside their comfort zones and challenge their perspectives. We will select a new coffee with each new season. These coffees will have a wonderful background story and are of exceptional cup quality. Unfortunately, we will not share any of that information with you—well, at least not until we crown the winner.
The Lottery will always be $30 buy-in per kilogram of coffee, plus shipping. This equates to approximately $10/lb USD. For each buy-in, you'll receive exactly one kilo with a maximum of 5kg per roaster. This cost is reflective of what we believe the pricing should be for quality green coffee that is thought-provoking, complex and dynamic that we love to drink and serve.
To enter into the Lottery, you must roast the coffee you receive and send back 500 grams for evaluation. Your coffee will be evaluated blindly by a panel of qualified judges and a multi-day cupping event with strict procedure and guidelines. We're hoping this brings friendly competition, collaboration and community to Canadian coffee. Additionally, once the Lottery has completed, you'll be offered the experience of tasting your roast next to other entries, on a blind basis as a way of extend value and education to all participants.
Coffee will ship on the 14th of April. We must have the coffee back in our hands on the 1st of June, latest, for evaluation on the 2nd through 4th.
So you’re probably wondering why we are doing this? Through our efforts we believe we can create dialogue around coffee pricing. By increasing the expectation for pricing on the specialty side we can change the level of respect for coffee producers globally. By raising the ceiling, we believe there is potential that together we can also lift the floor.
Should you wish to sell your roasts of the Lottery coffee, you're more than welcome to. We'd recommend around 3-4x for a retail price. This equates to a cost of about $1 per 10 grams of roasted coffee. If you'd like to offer a brewed service, we'd recommend 6-10x. A 250mL brew for ~$5 is less expensive than the worst glass of wine you'll find on any restaurants menu and your cost of goods should sit around 50-75cents. It might be fun to involve your clients in the process, perhaps share the coffee to them in a blind tasting and try to create a dialogue around flavour.
